The trip

Overview

Western Canada in high summer is one of the great escapes from the UAE heat: glacier lakes the colour of toothpaste, daytime temperatures in the low twenties, and a rail journey through the mountains that ranks among the world's finest. This route runs west with the scenery — Calgary into Banff, up to Lake Louise, then two daylight days aboard a glass-domed train winding through the canyons to Vancouver.

The rail leg travels only in daylight, with an overnight hotel stop in Kamloops, so you miss nothing: Kicking Horse Pass, the Spiral Tunnels, bald eagles over the Fraser Canyon and a fair chance of bears from the dome. Around it we build proper time in the mountains — gondolas, lake canoes and glacier walks — and three closing nights in Vancouver, one of the easiest cities anywhere to enjoy.

Highlights

  • Two daylight days on a glass-domed train through the Rockies to Vancouver
  • Canoeing on Lake Louise and the short hikes above Moraine Lake
  • The Banff gondola and hot springs beneath Sulphur Mountain
  • The Icefields Parkway to the Athabasca Glacier as a day trip
  • Three nights in Vancouver — Stanley Park, Granville Island and the seawall

Who it suits

  • Couples and older families escaping the UAE summer at its peak
  • Travellers who love scenery but hate long self-drives
  • Anyone with the Rockies rail journey long promised to themselves

Why this journey works

  • July and August — Dubai's worst months — are the Rockies' best
  • The train replaces two long mountain drives with the trip's biggest highlight
  • Calgary in, Vancouver out: the route only ever moves forward

Day by day

  1. Days 1–3

Calgary and Banff — into the mountains

Fly from Dubai to Calgary, usually with one stop, and transfer ninety minutes west into Banff National Park. Three nights in Banff town: the gondola up Sulphur Mountain, a soak in the hot springs, wildlife spotting along the Bow Valley Parkway at dusk, and a full-day run up the Icefields Parkway to walk on the Athabasca Glacier. Hotel style: a mountain lodge within walking distance of the town's restaurants.

  2. Days 4–5

Lake Louise — the postcard made real

A short transfer up the valley for two nights near Lake Louise. Canoe the lake early before the day crowds, walk the Plain of Six Glaciers trail to the teahouse, and drive to Moraine Lake for the Valley of the Ten Peaks — the view on the old twenty-dollar bill. Evenings are quiet up here, which is exactly the point.

  3. Days 6–7

The rail journey — mountains from the dome

Board the glass-domed train westbound. Day one crosses the Continental Divide at Kicking Horse Pass and threads the Spiral Tunnels before descending to Kamloops, where you overnight in a hotel — the train only runs in daylight. Day two follows the Thompson and Fraser rivers through Rainbow Canyon and Hell's Gate to the coast. Meals are served at your seat; guides call the wildlife as it appears.

  4. Days 8–9

Vancouver — city by the sea

Arrive into Vancouver in the evening for three nights. Cycle the Stanley Park seawall, graze Granville Island market, take the ferry across False Creek, and — if the season is right — add a whale-watching trip towards the Gulf Islands. A harbour-view hotel keeps the mountains in sight to the end.

  5. Day 10

    Home to the UAE

Fly home from Vancouver, usually with one stop, arriving in Dubai the following day.

Best Good Possible Less suitableSeasons are guidance, never a weather guarantee.

The scenic rail service operates roughly April to October, with July and August offering the most reliable alpine weather and Moraine Lake at full colour — book several months ahead for these peak weeks. June brings waterfalls at full volume; September brings golden larches and quieter trails. Lake Louise typically stays partly frozen into early June.
