The trip

Overview

Portugal fits a remarkable amount of character into a small, easy country, and the direct flight from Dubai to Lisbon opens it up for a single week of leave. This route takes the spine of it: three nights in Lisbon with a Sintra day among the palaces, a fast comfortable train north to Porto, and three nights out in the Douro Valley, where port-wine terraces fall in green staircases to the river.

It is a journey of appetites as much as sights — custard tarts still warm from the oven, grilled fish in tiled taverns, cellar tastings in Gaia and quintas where lunch stretches to mid-afternoon. Distances are short, the trains are pleasant, and a car is only needed for the valley stage, where the driving is half the pleasure.

Highlights

  • Lisbon's Alfama and Belém by tram, tuk-tuk and on foot
  • The palaces of Sintra, from the Pena's ramparts to Quinta da Regaleira's well
  • Porto's Ribeira riverfront and a cellar tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia
  • Two nights at a wine quinta among the Douro terraces
  • A traditional rabelo boat trip or river cruise through the valley

Who it suits

  • Food-and-wine travellers who measure a trip in long lunches
  • Couples wanting European charm without headline-city prices
  • First-time visitors to Portugal covering its essential trio in one go

Why this journey works

  • Direct Dubai–Lisbon flights put Portugal inside a single week of leave
  • Train, then car: each stage uses the transport that suits it best
  • The Douro finish converts a city break into a proper holiday

Day by day

  1. Days 1–3

Lisbon — seven hills and Sintra

The direct flight from Dubai lands you in Lisbon by early afternoon. Three nights in a Chiado or Alfama boutique hotel: tram 28's rattling circuit, the viewpoints and fado houses of the Alfama, Belém's monastery and the original custard-tart bakery, and a full day in Sintra for the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira — go early, the palaces reward the first hour of opening.

  2. Days 4–5

Porto — the riverfront and the cellars

The train north takes around three hours along the coast. Two nights above the Ribeira: the Livraria Lello bookshop and São Bento station's tile murals, a walk across the Dom Luís I bridge's upper deck, and an afternoon in the Gaia cellars tasting ports you will not find exported. Dinner is grilled fish or the francesinha, once, for the experience.

  3. Days 6–8

The Douro Valley — terraces and quintas

Collect a car and follow the N222 east along the river — regularly cited among the world's most scenic drives. Three nights at a wine-estate quinta near Pinhão: vineyard walks, a tasting lunch on a terrace above the bends of the river, a rabelo boat trip, and one unhurried day of doing almost nothing with a very good view. Harvest season adds grape-treading if your dates align.

  4. Day 9

    Home to the UAE

Drive back to Porto — around ninety minutes — and fly home to Dubai via a short European connection, or from Lisbon if the schedule favours it.

Best Good Possible Less suitableSeasons are guidance, never a weather guarantee.

April to June and September to October are ideal — warm, clear and lively without peak crowds. September brings the Douro harvest, the valley's most atmospheric weeks, and quinta rooms book far ahead. July and August are hot inland though Lisbon stays breezy; winters are mild, quiet and excellent value, with the cities entirely enjoyable in a light jacket.
