The trip
Overview
Sri Lanka rewards travellers who give it more than a beach week, and pairing it with the Maldives turns one long-haul-quality trip into two holidays. The first eight nights move through the island with a private car and driver-guide — the rock fortress at Sigiriya, cave temples at Dambulla, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, then up into tea country where the air drops ten degrees. The final five nights are pure Maldives: one resort, one lagoon, no itinerary.
From the UAE this is an unusually efficient combination. Colombo is around four and a half hours from Dubai, Malé a forty-five-minute hop from Colombo, and the return from Malé is direct — so the routing never doubles back. A private driver-guide throughout Sri Lanka means the pace flexes to you: more time at a spice garden, less at a museum, a stop for hoppers whenever they smell right.
It suits couples especially, but we also run it for families with older children who can handle a touring week before the beach payoff.
Highlights
- ✦Climb Sigiriya rock fortress at first light
- ✦Dambulla cave temples and the ruins of Polonnaruwa
- ✦Kandy's Temple of the Tooth and the lakeside old town
- ✦Scenic hill-country rail ride through the tea estates
- ✦Tea-factory visit and tastings around Nuwara Eliya or Ella
- ✦Five-night Maldives finale in an overwater or beach villa
Who it suits
- ●Couples and honeymooners who want substance before the lagoon
- ●UAE residents with two weeks who refuse to spend them all on a sunlounger
- ●Families with teenagers who travel well on the road
Why this journey works
- ✓The open-jaw routing — into Colombo, home from Malé — wastes no days
- ✓A private driver-guide makes Sri Lanka flexible in a way group tours cannot be
- ✓Eight touring nights then five beach nights is the proven ratio: enough of each, too much of neither
Day by day
Days 1–3
The Cultural Triangle — rock fortresses and ruined cities
Fly Dubai to Colombo and drive north-east to the Cultural Triangle, settling into a jungle-edge boutique lodge for three nights. Climb Sigiriya early, before the heat and the crowds; take an afternoon at the Dambulla cave temples; cycle or jeep through the ruins of Polonnaruwa with your guide filling in the twelfth century as you go. Evenings are pool, curry and birdsong.
Days 4–5
Kandy — the hill capital
A morning drive south with a stop at a spice garden in Matale, arriving in Kandy for two nights in a colonial-era hotel above the lake. Visit the Temple of the Tooth at puja time, walk the market for batik and Ceylon sapphire browsing, and catch a traditional dance performance if the timing suits. Kandy is busy — your guide makes it navigable.
Days 6–7
Tea country by rail
Board the hill-country train for the famous stretch through the tea estates — one of the great slow railway rides, all viaducts, mist and waving children. Two nights in a tea-planter-style bungalow around Nuwara Eliya or Ella: a tea-factory tour with tastings, a walk to Little Adam's Peak or the Nine Arches Bridge, and log fires in the evening at altitude.
Day 8
Down to Colombo
Descend from the hills to Colombo for one night near the Galle Face seafront. If energy allows, a short evening walk along the promenade and dinner at one of the city's excellent modern Sri Lankan restaurants; otherwise, room service and an early night before the beach chapter begins.
Days 9–13
The Maldives — the reward
A forty-five-minute flight from Colombo to Malé, then your seaplane or speedboat to the resort. Five nights with nothing required: house-reef snorkelling, a sunset cruise, a spa afternoon to work out the touring, and meals that need no planning. We match the island to your style — barefoot rustic or polished — and to your budget after the touring spend.
Day 14
Malé to home
Transfer back to Malé for the direct flight to the UAE, landing the same evening with two very different holidays behind you.
When to go
The Cultural Triangle and hill country are at their best from roughly December to April, which conveniently overlaps the Maldives dry season; the mid-year months still work well inland but bring livelier seas to Sri Lanka's south-west. Hill-country evenings are genuinely cool all year — pack a layer you will not need again until the flight home.
